What Is a Barrel Roll?

Question: What Is a Barrel Roll?

“This is your captain speaking. Things are a little boring up front here folks, so I thought I’d attempt a little barrel roll to liven things up. Now, I’ve never done this before, so things might get a little bumpy. Wish me luck!” These are never the words you want to hear from your pilot, and here’s why!

Answer: The phrase “do a barrel roll”¬†first emerged during World War I when flying aces would use the move to outwit the enemy during aerial combat. It was a phrase that would later be resurrected in the popular Super Nintendo game Star Fox, released in 1997. Since then, the phrase has been used in many memes, and often with hilarious results. The move works great in a plane, but not so well on a cruise liner, it would seem.
